What is Legacy of Leadership?
LOL is a program designed to develop gifted individuals into the spiritual leaders that our church and city need. Our mission is “to intentionally prepare, equip, and support participants in their discipleship and leadership journey as they discern God’s will for their lives as servant leaders, bringing the Kingdom of Heaven to Richmond, Virginia and beyond.” It was first created and implemented in 2014 and has graduated over 115 lay leaders. 2025 will be the eighth time we have offered this course at Richmond’s First Baptist Church.
Who can participate?
All participants are nominated by the Legacy planning team and the ministerial staff for their demonstrated leadership potential and the ways they embody service to others. Being nominated means that we have seen your work, your heart, and your willingness to step up and lead others. Each nominee is then vetted by the staff before being sent a letter of invitation to join the upcoming cohort. The number of participants is limited each session to allow for deeper discussion, questions, and teamwork activities.
What is the time commitment?
The Legacy course is held over 5 sessions: one Friday evening dinner and 4 Saturdays in the fall (every other weekend). Typical Saturday sessions run from 8:30am-4pm. We recognize this is a big commitment and each session is curated to focus on specific set of information and skills. Due to this level of involvement, we do ask that participants plan to attend every session in order to graduate from the course.
What is the cost?
We are investing in you so there is no cost for participation in Legacy of Leadership.
How do I prepare in advance?
You will be provided with a notebook, reading materials, and other tools a month in advance of the first session…along with a few special Legacy gifts from our team!
What can I expect from each session?
You will be exposed to a combination of experiential learning, lectures, hands on projects, small groups, worship, and more! We have invited special guest speakers, seasoned lay leaders, and ministers from the church to lead various sessions. Topics covered will highlight different processes within RFBC as well as an in depth look at servant leadership, habits of being and doing, leadership skills, how to deal with change, conflict and the direction of the church, communication strategies, and more!
What if I need childcare?
If childcare is the only reason you are not able to attend, please reach out to one of our team members and let us know! We will be happy to work with you to create a plan for childcare during the sessions.
What if I have dietary concerns?
We want to honor your dietary restrictions! Please contact us and let us know what you can or cannot have and we will make sure each meal includes your needs.

This is the first I’ve heard of legacy…how can I be involved?
A new cohort of Legacy of Leadership is held every 18 months to 2 years. If you have not been nominated for the course but would like to be considered in the future, please email Allison Collier and your name will be placed on a future review list!
