Recently, a small group of us pulled up chairs together for our second session of Building Your Finances God’s Way. If you’ve ever sat in a room to talk about money, you know the feeling: folks tend to sit a little upright, hold their cards close, and wonder if they’re about to be handed a lecture on why they shouldn’t buy a cup of coffee.
We were looking through practical worksheets and talking honestly about the weight debt puts on our shoulders—the kind of quiet strain that follows you into the grocery store or keeps you awake at 2 a.m.
In the middle of our discussion, one of our participants paused, looked up, and said with complete honesty:
“Honestly? If someone walked in right now and paid off everything I owe, I’d be so grateful I’d do anything in the world for them.”
The room went completely still. Nobody laughed; nobody corrected them. We all just sat there nodding.
Because we’ve all felt that. We know what it feels like to wish for a clean slate, to imagine the sudden lift of a burden you’ve been carrying for miles. When someone steps into your corner and takes on a cost you couldn’t handle yourself, a polite “thank you” card doesn’t cut it. You want to honor that person with everything you have.
And right there in the quiet of that circle, the real heart of the gospel came alive in a way no lecture ever could.
Isn’t that exactly what Christ did for every single one of us?
Long before any of us ever stared down a car payment, a mortgage, or a stack of overdue bills, we carried an impossible debt—one we could never work enough overtime or scrimp enough pennies to clear on our own. Yet Jesus stepped into our mess, absorbed the whole balance Himself, and told us we were free to live differently.
When that truth sinks from your head down into your chest, the way you look at money changes completely.
Budgeting stops being a joyless chore. Giving stops feeling like an obligation. Instead, taking care of what we have becomes an act of gratitude. It turns into an everyday response of Love to the One who took care of our deepest need before we even knew how to ask.
Our current class is already underway and digging deep into these conversations, but the journey to financial peace doesn’t have to wait for the next semester.
If you’re feeling the weight of the debt right now and want to start exploring these same principles at your own pace, you can find practical worksheets, budgeting tools, and debt-reduction calculators over at Compass Financial Ministries: compassfinancialministry.org You might even find a virtual class that fits your crazy schedule?!
Take a look, explore the tools, and remember: Christ will meet me right where you are! The rest is a Journey of Generosity.
