Most churches are trying to get people to heaven. We're trying to bring heaven to earth.

Gathering Spaces Renovations

As you enter our building, you are greeted with a welcoming smile, however, our infrastructure isn’t quite as welcoming.

From the lighting to the finishes, it’s time for an upgrade.  If walls could talk, we’d want ours to say “hello neighbor, welcome to First Baptist.  Let’s sit down, get comfortable, and get to know each other.”

Congregation approves deacon recommendation to separate from the Southern Baptist Convention, ending a 179-year relationship

In a special called business meeting held on Sunday morning, May 19, the congregation of Richmond’s First Baptist Church voted overwhelmingly to follow the deacons’ recommendation to separate from the SBC. The meeting was held during the church’s regular Sunday School hour, and was co-facilitated by Pastor Jim Somerville and Deacon Chair Daniel Hocutt. Chairman Hocutt opened the meeting with prayer and a re-statement of the motion, followed by Dr. Somerville, who shared the historical context for the decision. After 30 minutes of open and respectful discussion the matter was put to a vote. Those in favor were enthusiastic in their response, with only a few dissenting votes.

How do we do it?

We look around for anything that doesn’t look like Heaven, and then roll up our sleeves and get to work.

You can help!  Whether you live just down the street or halfway around the world.  Anyone can do this work and everyone is welcome.

Matching Gift Program

Sunday, May 12–Sunday, June 9

Last year’s Matching Gift Program was so successful we reached our goal early and additional donors have asked to match gifts. This year our anonymous donors have agreed to match gifts to First Baptist Church’s ministry and missions fund up to $60,000! We will kick off the program on Sunday, May 12. Your gift must be over and above your regular giving to ministry and missions. We are so grateful for the way God is working at First Baptist Church.

It’s because of your generosity that we are able to bring The Kingdom of Heaven to Richmond, Virginia.
